Field-testing your tune — signal-to-noise tips
Your song sounds great in the workshop. At the field, with wind and ambient chatter, it might not. A few last-minute tweaks make the difference.
The biggest disappointment in motor music is the gap between "sounds great on my bench" and "nobody at the field heard it". Bench acoustics are kind. Outdoor acoustics are not.
Here's what I've learned about closing that gap.
What the field steals
A few things change between your workshop and a flying field:
- Background noise floor jumps 10–20 dB. Cars, wind, conversation, other drones.
- No walls to reflect sound back. Your tune dies in open air faster than you'd expect.
- Listeners stand farther away. 5–10 metres instead of 50 cm.
- Wind eats high frequencies. A breeze removes the top octave of your tune.
The combined effect is that a tune that's perfectly audible at arm's length on your desk can be nearly inaudible 8 metres away at the field.
Tune choices that survive
- Hooks with held notes survive better than rapid-fire melodies. The longer each note rings, the more the listener's ear can integrate it against the noise.
- Songs in the middle octaves (5 and 6) project best. The lowest playable octave (4) gets eaten by ambient bass. The highest (7) gets eaten by wind.
- Songs with characteristic rhythm (Imperial March, Jaws, Tetris bass line) are recognisable even at low SNR because your brain pattern-matches the rhythm before the pitch.
Songs that don't survive outdoors well:
- Anything fast and quiet (lyrical piano pieces, fast chiptune passages).
- Anything in the top octave (high-pitched melodies get blown away).
- Songs whose hook depends on a particular timbre (anything with vibrato or pitch-bend nuance — motors can't do nuance).
Volume tricks
You can't actually crank the volume of an ESC playback (no setting for it), but you can game perceived loudness:
- Aim the frame at the audience. Arms perpendicular to the listener direction project the loudest. Hold the quad so the audience sees the front edge.
- Get up off the ground. Set the quad on a table or held-up arm. Ground absorbs a chunk of the radiated sound.
- Avoid open grass. Tarmac, concrete, picnic-table tops all reflect better than grass.
- Wait for the wind to drop. A 5 km/h breeze halves perceived loudness at 8 metres.
Pre-arm vs. post-arm timing
Some pilots like to arm right when people are looking, others like to arm and wait. For motor music: arm before drawing attention. The song plays during arming, so you want people watching the moment you press the arm switch.
Trick: announce the song. "Listen to this" + arm. Gets attention focused, gives the song its full attention window.
What to leave out
A few things people try that don't help much:
- Repeating the song twice. You can't — Bluejay plays the melody once on arm and that's it. Re-arming plays it again, but the audience window is gone by then.
- Boosting bass with Octave shift -1. Counter-intuitively this makes the song quieter outdoors because low frequencies get eaten faster.
- Adding extra "ornamentation". Trills and grace notes confuse the perception. Keep the hook clean.
A reality check
After all of this, motor music outdoors maxes out at about 50–70 dB SPL at 5 metres for a 5-inch quad. That's quieter than a normal conversation. It's a charming feature, not a PA system.
Manage expectations. The right audience for motor music is the 3–6 other pilots standing next to you at the meet, not the parents and bystanders 30 metres away.
