Transposing songs that don't fit the motor's range
Your favourite song has notes below octave 4 or above octave 7? Don't give up on it. Transposition rescues more songs than you'd think — if you do it right.
Motors can only sing about three usable octaves. Real songs don't care. Bass lines dip below the floor, vocal hooks climb past the ceiling, and the first draft of your RTTTL conversion ends up with notes the ESC either clamps or mangles.
The fix is transposition — shifting the whole melody up or down until it fits. It sounds trivial. It mostly is. But there are a few traps.
Know your actual range
Bluejay on a typical 5-inch setup plays roughly octave 4 through octave 7, and the extremes are rough. Octave 4 is quiet and muddy, octave 7 is shrill and disappears outdoors (wind eats it first). The sweet spot is octave 5 and 6.
So the real target isn't "fits between 4 and 7" — it's "as much of the melody as possible lands in 5 and 6".
Shift by octaves first
The cheapest transposition is a full octave: every note keeps its letter name, only the octave digit changes. c5 becomes c6. No re-thinking of accidentals, no key change, and the melody sounds identical — just higher or lower.
Do this first. Find the lowest and highest note of your melody, then slide the whole thing until the melodic centre (where most notes live) sits in octave 5–6. If the song spans more than three octaves, no shift will save it — see below.
Shift by semitones when octaves aren't enough
Sometimes an octave shift leaves the melody straddling the boundary awkwardly — the verse fits but the chorus pokes one or two semitones over the top. Shifting the whole song down two semitones fixes it, but now every note changes name: c6 becomes a#5, e6 becomes d6, and so on.
Two warnings:
- Do it to every note or none. A half-transposed melody is instantly, painfully wrong. Recompute the whole string.
- Sharps multiply. Transposing into an awkward key turns a clean C-major tune into a thicket of
a#andd#. RTTTL doesn't care, but you will when debugging. If you can pick between shifting down 2 or up 1, choose whichever lands in the friendlier key.
When the song simply spans too much
Some melodies genuinely cover four octaves (queue any power ballad with a final-chorus key change). Your options:
- Cut the extreme section. Usually the shorter version is better anyway.
- Fold the outliers. Take just the notes that overflow and move only those by an octave. This changes the melody's contour — a rising line suddenly drops — but for two or three notes in a fast passage, nobody notices. For a held climax note, everybody notices. Judge accordingly.
- Pick the other hook. Many songs have a second recognisable phrase (the riff instead of the vocal line) with a tighter range.
The lazy check
After transposing, scan your RTTTL string for any octave digit that isn't 5 or 6. Each one is a note worth double-checking on the bench. A handful of 4s and 7s is fine; a melody that's mostly 4s and 7s means your transposition missed the centre.
